The crack Sampson Naval Training Station basketball team is being sparked by George Milhaven, Bill McKeever, and Max Zaslofsky, the first two ex-St. John's stars and the third a future Indian ace... A Central Y.M.C.A. gymnastic team romance culminated in the marriage of Maj. Stanley Sieja and Wac Sgt Wanda Poniatowski, two former gym stars Tex Seeger of Brooklyn College is now assigned to an admiral's staff on the West Coast and awaiting promotion to lieutenant commander... He's a cousin of Lt. Irwin Witty, now a prisoner of war in Germany... Another POW is Capt. Harold Hillman, son of the Dartmouth track coach.
John Giovanelli, who never participated in boxing at Cleveland, is a member of the Parris Island fistic squad... The daughter of Jim Thorpe, Corp. Grace Thorpe, has arrived in New Guinea... Joe Cassidy, who played for the A. and S. basketball squad, is in the navy... Bainbridge's quintet features Solly Schwartz, one of L.I.U.'s great hustlers... Andy Kerr's son, Bill, was one of the survivors of the carrier Princeton, sunk during the Leyte invasion... The 13th Regiment five meets 14th Regiment on Dec. 16.
Plans for monthly boxing shows at the Brooklyn Armed Guiard Center have been completed with the first slated for Friday... One of the better, although unpublicized, service hoop outfits hereabouts is the U.S. Coast Guard Receiving Unit at Manhattan Beach, which has won 10 of 11 tests to date... Tim John Mardy and Dick Krauser are local members of the five... Among their victims are Republic and Norden... Jack (Kid) Berg, former lightweight favorite, has received a medical discharge from R.A.F. in London.
Top Sgt. George Nicholson, Joe Louis' sparring partner, and Sgt. Jackie Wilson are back at Mitchel Field after a tour of many battlefields... Handicapped by a bad knee all year, Corp. Moe Dubilier, Fort Hamilton's high scorer, has hung up his basketball sneakers for a while... One of the 19-year-old buck privates at Parris Island is Charlie Paddocks son, Prisk, who frankly admits he's no athlete and has no interest in sports.
