John Kerry 1971
In April of 1971, Vietnam veteran John Kerry would appear before the Senate on behalf of Vietnam Veterans Against the War and deliver a passionate speech explaining why the group disagreed with America's involvement in the war. This all came at the end of a week-long series of protests in Washington D.C. by VVAW, which included members sleeping on the steps outside the Supreme Court. As for Kerry, he was viewed as a spokesman for the VVAW, and as Marine John Musgrave said in Ken Burns' Vietnam War documentary, “I thought I had never heard such an incredible speech that says exactly what I’m feeling. It was extraordinary...extraordinary.”
